Selecting Arc Flash Label Material

What criteria are used when selecting vinyl for arc flash labels? Is thicker or thinner vinyl better?

In general, the thinner the vinyl the longer its life will be. Vinyl labels fail as result of the label starting to come loose around the edges. The main mechanism is friction resulting from the material edge profile. That means the thicker the label, the greater the edge profile, the sooner the label fails.

There is a trade-off, however. Thicker labels resist friction across the face of the label better. They have more material to wear away before the vinyl wears through in spots. This limits how thin vinyl label material can be.

For general purpose labels, that may be used in a wide variety of environments and applications, a 3.0 mil vinyl provides the longest average life. However, arc flash labels are used in a low wear environment. Added thickness does not result in increased label life. For arc flash labels an vinyl thickness of 2.0 mil provides the maximum life. Thicker vinyls, with greater edge profiles, will tend to have a shorter life and moisture and air begins to work its way under the edge ofthe label.

If you have a Safety PRO printer, you want to be sure you are always getting the best quality, most durable labels for all your labeling applications. That's why you should be using superior quality arc flash labeling supplies from Discount Industrial Labeling Supplies. Give us a call today at 1-877-597-8833. You'll be glad you did.

DuraStripe Aisle & Floor Marking Tape

Need floor markers? Need aisle markers?

It used to be that lines were painted on floors. That required that the floor be cleaned and prepared. Workers with painting skills were required. The area could not be used until the paint was applied and had dried. It was smelly, messy and inconvenient.

With DuraStripe tapes marking floors and aisles has become a simple, quick, and economical task. A single employee can apply over 1,600 of floor marking tape per hour, without causing any disruptions to work.

DuraStripe tapes are available in eight colors and in widths from 2 inches to 34 inches. They are also available in three thicknesses ranging from 28 mils to the super thick 72 mils for the DuraStripe Supreme.

Give us a call today at 1-877-597-8833 for more information about DuraStripe floor marking tapes, or to place your order.

Are You Really Getting Quality? Ask The Experts.

In my last post I talked about Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor and how his quest for more power always let to disaster. Are you doing the same thing when it comes to making your labels and signs?

Does "more vinyl" mean better labels? Or does it mean disaster? Does thicker vinyl mean higher quality? If so, why not have 10 mil or 15 mil thick vinyl? That's going to make big, sturdy labels... right?

Yes, as the vinyl gets thicker, the vinyl is more durable. The problem is that this does not mean labels made with that vinyl will be more durable. There are more factors that contribute to label life than just the thickness of the vinyl.

For example, the thicker the vinyl, the more it tries to retain it's original shape. Vinyl comes on rolls, and it will try to return to the shape it had on the roll. The thicker the vinyl the stronger the force putting a curl into the vinyl will be. This has implications in both print quality and durability of the label.

The SafetyPro has a straight-through tape path. That means the tape comes off the roll and then must lie flat as it moves under the print head. Thicker tapes don't lie flat. They will have a slight curl and this can result in uneven printing. The thicker the tape is, the more difficult it is to get quality printing.

The same problem impacts label durability. After it is applied the vinyl will continue to try to return to the curl it had on the roll. The result is that the label curls away from the surface on which it is applied, opening voids in the adhesive. The label may have as reduced life, falling off well before its full expected life. Or the voids may allow liquids or solvents to more easily attack the adhesive... again resulting in reduced label life.

The key is to find the optimum thickness that delivers both maximum vinyl life AND maximum label life. For most types of vinyl this is a thickness of 3.0 mil.

So trust the experts. Turn to a vendor that has the experience and knowledge to deliver the best labeling materials. A vendor that understands all of the factors that affect label life... not a Tim Taylor who always relies on "more power" as the solution that inevitably leads to disaster.

Contact Discount Labeling Supplies for all your SafetyPro supplies needs. Call 1-877-597-8833.

Trust The Experts

Something we had had to learn as kids was that what seemed to us to be the right answer to a problem, was not always the right answer. Correcting knowing the right answer comes with greater knowledge and experience. It's the same with labeling.

It would seem that the right answer is that the thicker the vinyl, the better durability. It reminds me of the "Tool Time" TV show. Tim was always on a quest for "more power". Bigger was always better. And it always led to disaster. It's the same when selecting vinyl tape for making labels. Bigger, or in this case thicker, is not always better.

For example, the thicker the vinyl, the more prone it is to disturbances from external elements. Thicker vinyl has a higher edge that provides more of an edge to peel up... and more of an edge for solvents to get under... and more surface for pressurized liquids to grab hold of.

Those who are experienced know that there is an optimum point when it comes to selecting vinyl thickness. Increased thickness does provide longer label life, up to a point. After that increasing thickness will decrease label life. For most applications that point is at a thickness of 3.0 mil.

When it comes to selecting supplies for your SafetyPro printer, go with the experts. Purchase your SafetyPro supplies from a vendor that has the knowledge and experience to provide the best labeling and sign making supplies. Don't be like Tim on Tool Time, grabbing for "more power" and heading for disaster every time. Because more power is not always the right solution, more knowledge is the answer.

More Compatible SafetyPRO Supplies

It's amazing how short the list of SafetyPro supplies is, and how long our list of supplies for the SafetyPRO is. That's because we have a dedicated team constantly researching and developing new supplies, and we've been doing this for a long time. From ribbons for the SafetyPRO, to vinyl tapes and specialty supplies.

One of my favorites is the glow-in-the-dark tape. I've done a lot of work in power plants, paper mills and oil refineries. Having a method for delivering information in an emergency situation when the lights go out, is critical. Not just during the nightime... in most cases no outside light is available. When the power goes out, no matter what time of day it is it gets dark, except for emergency the lighting. Having labels and signs that glow in the dark, without requiring an outside power source, is an ideal way for delivering needed information right at the point where it is needed.

We supply glow-in-the-dark tapes for the SafetyPRO printer. We have phosphorescent tape in-stock and ready to ship to you today... as well as a wide selection of other supplies for your SafetyPRO.

Working From A P.O. Box?

Your business is important to you... it is your livelihood. What you do at work affects your personal reputation. And I assume you don't want to do unnecessary work, or have to deal with unexpected problems.

In that case you must also put some care into selecting your vendors. You look for substantial companies that have proven themselves by staying in business, and growing their business. Companies that have the staff, facilities and resources to solve problems.

The Google Street picture below shows the location of the original supplier of the SafetyPro printer. Their address is a P.O. Box in the Mail Room Plus store located in this shopping plaza.

We are offering you an alternative. We're not just a P.O. Box in a retail mail box store. We have substantial offices, research facilities, warehouses and manufacturing facilities in two locations. The Google Satellite view below shows our location for manufacturing and shipping supplies for the SafetyPro. We occupy about half of the large building to the left of the arrow.

Why take a chance?

Buy from a vendor that actually has a physical presence, not just a P.O. Box in a retail mail box store.

Give us a call at 1-877-597-8833. We're here from 7:00 AM until 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday (Pacific Time) to provide you with supplies for your SafetyPro printer.

Now Providing Industrial Safety Solutions

The Discount Labeling Supplies web site has expanded again. This time they have added information about their line of industrial safety solutions products. Two product lines are highlighted.

The first industrial safety product listed, and it is probably first because it is the first line of defense in industrial safety, are LOTO (lock out / tag out) supplies from Master Lock. They carry the Master Lock Safety Series of LOTO equipment and supplies.

A key solution to many industrial safety issues is effective communication. This starts from the moment someone walks into the facility, through the training they receive, and out in the plant. Providing safety information at the point of the safety hazard is required by OSHA. But, a comprehensive industrial safety solution includes more than what is required. It includes providing operating procedures, maintenance information, change-over instructions and other types of information posted right at the point of need. This helps ensure that proper procedures are followed and work is done completely and to specifications. The result is both a safer and more efficient operation.

Accessories For The SafetyPro

A new page has been added to the Discount Labeling Supplies web site... accessories for the SafetyPro. We have so much available to the SafetyPro that it is impossible to get it immediately all listed. Accessories for the SafetyPro are a good example.

We offer several important accessories, such as a battery pack. The battery allows you to take your SafetyPro any place you need to do labeling or make signs. You are no longer limited by needing a nearby electrical outlet. Make the labels and signs you need in the field or on the shop floor.

Another useful accessory is the hardside carrying case. This case protects your SafetyPro and supplies wherever you need to take them. Designed to fit under an airline seat, and with metal reinforced lock tabs for greater security, the carrying case makes it easy and safe to transport your SafetyPro printer. It features a foam interior cut to fit the SafetyPro, with separate compartments for supplies and other accessories. Although it is lightweight, to make it easier to move it includes a pull-out handle and easy-roll wheels.

There is no better return on investment than to spend $14.95 to purchase a dust cover for your SafetyPro printer. If your printer is in a dusty or dirty environment such as a maintenance shop, construction site, fab facility or garage, the dust cover will extend the life of your printer by protecting it from dust, debris and dirt when it is not in use. Even if your machine is not located in a "dirty" environment, the dust cover still protects it from the normal dirt and dust than can accumulate over time.

We also have accessories such as Pipe Grapper pipe marking sleeves that make labels dirty, rusty, greasy or oily pipes fast and easy. Or our plastic and aluminum sign blanks that provide a rigid backing for signs.

Give us a call today for more information about accessories for your Safety Pro. We're at 1-877-597-8833. You'll be glad you did.

Order Supplies For Your SafetyPro Online

Our web site is online and ready to to your orders 24-7. Visit it at: Safety Pro Supplies

All of the most popular supplies for your Safety Pro printer can be ordered online, and will typically be shipped to you that same day. We have a larger inventory of supplies for the SafetyPro printer than anyone else, plus you'll get premium quality, AND you'll save 25%!

When it comes to quality, you'll be getting the best. Give us a call and ask us about the size of our product development and testing staff. Then ask your current supplier of SafetyPro supplies the same question. (While you are at it, ask then for the total number of full-time employees they have.) Be sure to ask if the product development and testing people are dedicated to product development and testing full-time. Our staff is. We thoroughly test all of the supplies we sell, before we sell them. Sometimes that testing may take over a year to complete, but we know that long-lasting, quality labels and signs are important.

Why is a devotion to the testing of supplies so important? Even after a product has been developed and has started shipping, continual testing and quality monitoring must be done on an ongoing basis because raw material supplies change their products. An ink that was working fine last month suddenly no longer results in quality printing. What happened? The ink supplier upgraded their ink formula and, unfortunately that upgrade was not a good one for printing on weather resistant vinyl. What do we do?

We find and test alternate suppliers. We work with the existing supplier to develop a better ink? We develop the in-house capability to make what we need. We do whatever it takes to ensure you get only the best quality supplies for your Safety Pro printer. No other supplier can say that. No other vendor of supplies for the SafetyPro spends the time and money that we do to ensure you always receive quality supplies for your Safety Pro.

Give us a call today at 1-877-587-8833. You'll be glad you did.

Wire Labels - Extending The Capabilities of Your SafetyPro

When you purchased your SafetyPro, the dealer could only offer a limited range of supplies. A label printer is only as good as the supplies that are available for that printer. If there are no supplies for making wire and cable labels, then you can not use the printer to make wire and cable labels... unless you give us a call.

We have a wide range of specialty supplies for the SafetyPro printer, including both shrink tubes and wire wraps. Both of these materials are used to label wires and cables.

Shrink tube slips over the end of a wire. A heat gun is used to shrink it to a tight fit on the wire. It provides a permanent marker that identifies the wire.

Self-laminating wire wraps have a opaque section on which the information is printed. It is applied to the wire or cable. Then a clear "tail" is wrapped around the wire or cable, covering and protecting the printed section. Since wire wraps are wrapped around the wire or cable, they may be applied at any time.

We have both types of materials in stock for the SafetyPro printer. Give us a call at 1-877-597-8833 for more information.

SafetyPro Tip - Black Marks On Labels

Here's A SafetyPro Tip:

Does the first label you print have a black bar across it and need to be reprinted?

What has happened is that several labels had been previously printed on the SafetyPro. This heated up the print head. Once the SafetyPro had finished printing labels there was sufficient residual heat in the printhead, that with the printhead in constant contact with the ribbon and label material, that it slowly melted the ink onto the ribbon. This resulted in a black mark on the material that would be used to print the next label.

To prevent this from happening, when you are finished printing labels, open the SafetyPro so that the printhead is no longer in contact with the label material. It only takes a few moments to cool, then the machine can be closed.

Look No Further For SafetyPro Supplies

If you'd like to save 25% on supplies for your SafetyPro printer, give us a call at 1-877-597-8833 today. If you'd like to save 25% on supplies for your SafetyPro Plus printer, give us a call today. We stock supplies for both printers, and have a wider range of supplies than the original supplier... and you save 25%. You can't beat a deal like this.

What about quality? We've been in the labeling and sign business for over 35 years. We have a dedicated R&D staff that conducts extensive testing on all of the supplies we sell. You are not just getting good quality... you are getting top quality, full-tested supplies. For example, with original SAfetyPro supplies when you print a die-cut RTK label you may have to manually apply a over-laminate to protect the label. With our supplies that isn't necessary. They are designed from the start to be durable and long-lasting. Give us a call today and we'll be glad to show the difference between our die-cut RTK labels for the SafetyPro and the labels you may have previously been using.

You thought saving 25% on the cost of labels was a good deal? Add in the higher quality and less labor required to make RTK labels and your savings are even greater. Give us a call today. You'll be glad you did.

Arc Flash Labels and the SafetyPro

There has been a growing recognition of arc flash as a serious hazard that has not properly addressed in the past. An important part of arc flash safety is using labels and signs to warn employees, contractors and visitors about arc flash hazards.

The SafetyPro can print arc flash labels, but may not have the selection of supplies available that provides the versatility that allows you to create an arc flash labeling and sign system that is consistent with your existing standards. And even when the supplies you need are available, you'll be paying 25% more than you need to have paid.

Give us a call at 1-877-597-8833 and our experts will be happy to discuss your SafetyPro arc flash labeling options. We stock three different types of label materials. We have preprinted die-cut labels that are available with either English or Spanish headers. You have the option of husing either a DANGER or WARNING header, so the signal word can be appropriate for the hazard level (meaning your labels will comply with the ANSI code.) We also offer blank die-cut labels, two-color continuous vinyl, and single color continuous vinyl supplies for your Safety Pro. No other supplier has such a wide selection of supplies for the SafetyPro printer.

In addition, with our supplies you have options for how to print labels or signs. You can use software you already have such as Microsoft Word to print any size label from a small 4x6 inch label to a sign that is 2 x 4 (feet) in size... and larger. We also have database software that diretly prints arc flash labels and allows keeps a record of your labels. Give us a call today at 1-877-597-8833 for more information.

SafetyPro Vinyl Options

It's not a good idea to use a screwdriver as a hammer, and trying to use a screwdriver as a wrench is completely futile. Using the right tool for the job is fundamental, and that also applies to labels and signs. Using the wrong vinyl tape can result in labels that don't last, or worse yet labels that do not clearly communicate their message... resulting and confusion and errors.

What's even better is when you can use the right tool and save money. That is what we offer you for your SafetyPro printer. We carry a wider selection of vinyl tapes for the SafetyPro and you'll typically save 25% when purchasing supplies for your SafetyPro printer from us.

For example, not only do we carry premium 3.0 mil vinyl tape supplies, we also carry a lighter weight 2.0 mil vinyl tape. What's the difference? The 3.0 mil vinyl is sturdier and more durable. However, it is a much stiffer tape. The 2.0 mil vinyl is more flexible, allowing it to conform to better curved and irregular surfaces, and stay stuck to those types of surfaces. So, depending on the type of of surface, a 2.0 mil vinyl may provide a longer life than the thicker 3.0 mil vinyl.

Give us a call today at 1-877-597-8833 and talk with one of our label and sign making experts. We'll be glad to help you select the right tape for the job, so that you get the best, most durable labels and signs... and you save money.

Ribbons For The SafetyPro

Let's start at the beginning. Without a ribbon your SafetyPro can't print anything. Without a quality ribbon you will not be getting durable, clear, effective labels and signs. Without the right ribbon, you may get no printing at all.

What do I mean by "the right ribbon". Different types of label materials have different characteristics. The "inks" from some types of ribbons may adhere to one type of material, but not to another. For example, the ribbon used to print on vinyl tapes will not print well on polyolefin shrink tubing. Of course, in the past that was not a problem because the maker of the SafetyPro does not have shrink tube material available for the SafetyPro. But we do. And we have the right ribbons for printing on polyolefin shrink tube.

Another consideration is how the label will be used. What type of environment will it be exposed to? SafetyPro ribbons are chemical resistant, just as our ribbons are also chemical resistant. But "chemical resistant" does not mean the printing will resists all types of chemicals. Take petroleum products for example. They are common and they dissolve a wide variety of materials, including the chemical resistant printing on your labels. If you need labels and signs that can stand up to exposure to petroleum products, you need to use a petroleum resistant ribbon.

We stock petroleum resistant ribbons for the SafetyPro printer. The last time we checked they were not available from the maker of the SafetyPro.

You'll hear that a lot. There are a lot of supplies that are not available from the maker of the SafetyPro... but you'll be able to get them from us.
